COURSE DESCRIPTION

A9A Field Training Officer Update Units: 1.00
 
Prerequisite(s): None.

Limitation on Enrollment: Must be sworn peace officer.
This course is designed to provide the student with an overview of the current legal issues and responsibilities of the field training officer. The course will focus on vehicle pursuits, weapons update, building searches, prisoner restraints, and the use of force. 24 hours lecture.

This course is designed to provide the student with an overview of the current legal issues and responsibilities of the field training officer.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.    Assess use of force options and describe appropriate situations for use of less than lethal ordinance.

2.    Analyze and describe appropriate situations for each use of force application.

3.    Analyze and describe the significance of unsafe police pursuit driving and punitive case decisions.

4.    Identify elements of officer safety techniques for searching a building.

1.    FTO overview
2.    Pursuit/vehicle stop procedures
3.    Less than lethal ordinance demonstration
4.    Semi-auto pistol refresher
5.    Building search techniques
6.    Use of prisoner restraints
7.    Force application update
   
Students are also assigned reading, writing and other outside assignments equivalent to two hours per one hour lecture.

 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

•    Utilizing problem solving activities that allow for demonstrating required skills and knowledge of current legal issues and responsibilities of the field training officer, vehicle pursuits, weapons update, building searches, prisoner restraints, and the use of force.
•    Assigning required readings in order to supplement classroom activities and expand knowledge of the current legal issues and responsibilities of the field training officer.
•    Participation in simulation exercises that will allow practical application and will demonstrate mastery of current legal issues and responsibilities of the field training officer, vehicle pursuits, weapons update, building searches, prisoner restraints, and the use of force.
•    Practicing learned skills to reinforce current legal issues and responsibilities of the field training officer.

 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

•    Computational and writing assignments, including written homework, to measure student learning progress on the current legal issues and responsibilities of the field training officer.
•    Skill demonstrations, class performance, problem solving, skill performance, and simulation exercises to assess successful understanding of current legal issues and responsibilities of the field training officer, vehicle pursuits, weapons update, building searches, prisoner restraints, and the use of force.
•    Final examination to evaluate mastery of the current legal issues and responsibilities of the field training officer.
