COURSE DESCRIPTION

A8A Field Training Officer Units: 1.50
 
Prerequisite(s): None.

Limitation on Enrollment: Must be sworn peace officer
This course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the purpose of the field training program. This course will focus on the fundamentals of basic training in patrol concepts and procedures. 32 hours lecture and 8 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.    Analyze the training and development of future trainees.

2.    Identify the five functions of the field training officer: supervisor, evaluator, role model, counselor, trainer.

3.    Define special training issues: liability issues, civil liabilities, employee due process rights.

4.    Demonstrate appropriate coaching techniques to trainees during a practical exercise.

Students are also assigned reading, writing and other outside assignments equivalent to two hours per one hour lecture.

 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

•    Utilizing problem solving activities that allow for demonstrating required skills and knowledge of the role of a field training officer, analyzing the training and development of future trainees, defining special training issues, and using appropriate coaching techniques.
•    Writing activities to reveal student progress and mastery of the fundamentals of basic training in patrol concepts and procedures, administration of field training, liability issues, and employee due process rights.
•    Assigning required readings in order to supplement classroom activities and expand knowledge of the field training program.
•    Participation in simulation exercises that will allow practical application and will demonstrate mastery of field training roles, coaching techniques, and field training concepts and procedures.
•    Practicing learned skills to reinforce the role of the field training officer, analyzing special training issues, coaching techniques, and development of trainees.

 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

•    Computational and writing assignments, including written homework and reading case studies, to measure student learning progress on the fundamentals of basic training in patrol concepts and procedures, administration of field training, liability issues, and employee due process rights.
•    Skill demonstrations, including class performance, problem solving, skill performance and simulation exercises to assess successful understanding of the purpose and practical application of the role of the field training officer.
•    Quizzes and a final examination to evaluate mastery of the field training program.
