COURSE DESCRIPTION

A6B Advanced Interview and Interrogation Course Units: 1.50
 
Prerequisite(s): None.

Limitation on Enrollment: Must be currently employed by a law enforcement agency and have POST or STC certification.
This POST certified course will provide advanced interview and interrogation techniques for experienced law enforcement personnel assigned to patrol or investigations and others who conduct criminal interviews and interrogations. This course will further refine the skills and techniques required to properly obtain statements, incriminating statements, admissions, and confessions. 28 hours lecture and 4 hours laboratory.

This POST-certified course will provide advanced interview and interrogation techniques for experienced law enforcement personnel.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

2.    The cognitive interview methods will be introduced

b.    Theories of persuasion

3.    Methods of overcoming problems inherent with child interviewing will be discussed
a.    Problems with age and/or maturity
b.    Interview facility
c.    Language
4.    The myths of polygraph application & its use will be discussed.
a.    Verbal detection of deception
b.    Non-verbal detection of deception
5.    Legal Issues involving statements and confessions will be discussed
a.    Miranda
b.    4th, 5th, 6th and 14th Amendments
c.    Signed statements
d.    Testifying

Students are also assigned reading, writing and other outside assignments equivalent to two hours per one hour lecture.

 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

1.    Presentation of class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to give the students the knowledge in interviewing and interrogation techniques.

2.    Videos/films/audio tapes will be used in order for students to see and hear actual interview and interrogations.

 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

1.    Practical exercises on the final day involving scenarios where each student will demonstrate their skills in interviewing and interrogating in simulated actual cases.
