COURSE DESCRIPTION

A5A Bicycle Patrol Units: 0.50
 
Prerequisite(s): None.

Limitation on Enrollment: Must be sworn peace officer
This course is designed to provide the student with an overview of the tactical handling of a mountain bicycle for use during law enforcement operations. The course will focus on public relations, nutrition, bicycle maintenance, and riding techniques. 32 hours laboratory.

This course is designed to provide the student with an overview of the tactical handling of a mountain bicycle for use during law enforcement operations.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.    Identify and demonstrate police bike patrol riding techniques.

2.    Apply concepts and methods of public relations, nutrition and bicycle operations.

3.    Demonstrate knowledge of police bike patrol safety equipment and safety procedures.

4.    Demonstrate police bike patrol maintenance procedures.

 
COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 

1.    Public Relations
a.   How to promote and involve your community with your bike team
a.    Administration of the Bicycle program.
c.   Addressing the legal aspects of bicycle patrols.                         
2.    Nutrition and Equipment
a.    Proper bicycle etiquette and bicycle nomenclature.
b.    Necessary equipment: Uniforms, accessories, nylon gear, bike storage.
c.    Proper hydration and energy effective nutrition.
3.    Maintenance
a.    Preventative maintenance
b.    Daily Inspections
c.    Minor repairs (flats, chains, adjustments, use of tools)           
4.    Riding Techniques
a.    Slow riding, control of bicycle, cone riding.
b.    Object jumping (curbs and obstacles)
c.    Stair ascending and descending on bicycle and with bicycle in-hand
d.    Arrest techniques
e.    Dismounting of bicycle at slow and high speeds
                    f.     Sliding techniques

Students are also assigned reading, writing and other outside assignments equivalent to two hours per one hour lecture.

 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

1.    Utilizing activities that allow for demonstrating required skills or knowledge of public relations, nutrition, equipment, bicycle maintenance, and riding techniques of bicycle patrol.
2.    Participation in simulation exercises that will replicate real life situations to allow practical application and demonstrate mastery of bicycle patrol operations, equipment, maintenance, and riding techniques.
3.    Practicing learned skills, including a night shift in a small community, structured to reinforce bicycle patrol tactics, officer safety, nutrition, maintenance, and riding techniques.

 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

1.    Skill demonstrations, skill performance, problem solving, and simulation exercises to assess successful understanding of public relations, nutrition, bicycle maintenance, officer safety and riding techniques related to bicycle patrol operations.
2.    City rides to evaluate students’ performance retention.
3.    A final examination to evaluate mastery of bicycle patrol operations and tactics.
