COURSE DESCRIPTION

3A Linux Computer Applications for Working Professionals
Same as: CAT-Office Technologies 3A
Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
This course introduces a suite of computer applications to students preparing to enter the office, business, and teaching professions. Individuals who are already established in these professions may also benefit from skills emphasized which include: use of basic operating system functions, Internet utilization, word processing, spreadsheets, database management, presentation graphics, and scheduling/time management. 54 hours lecture and 18 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

Apply operating system skills to navigate, run programs, and organize files and folders.

Apply design and development techniques that utilize software programs in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation graphics, scheduling/time management.

Demonstrate the ability to complete integrated documents using word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation graphics software applications.

Demonstrate use of Web browsers to browse, search for information, and upload and download files from the Internet.

 
COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 
  1. The intent of this course is to provide the student with the tools necessary to create business documents utilizing the Open Office application suite using the Linux operating system.  With these objectives in mind there are many topics that must be covered to satisfy the numerous skills required. 
  2. The linux operating system has several windowing managers.  The student must become familiar with how to login, choose the manager, navigate the desktop, open an application, save the product and reverse the process.  Knowledge of the Linux file system and structure are essential to accomplish this task.
  3. The applications that will be utilized belong to the Open Office suite.  A thorough understanding of Writer (Word Processor), Impress (Presentation), Calc (Spreadsheet) and Base (Database) components are required for working, collaborating and corresponding in a business environment.
  4. The student will create, edit, retrieve and save files from all the applications noted above.  Conversion from other document types will also be done as well as integrating and embedding from one application into another.
  5. All these components will need to be covered to satisfy the complete development of business reports in the Open Office suite.
 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  •  Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to prepare the student for the homework assignments and review of the reading material
  • Develop and assign class exercises such as weekly homework problems in order to familiarize and gain practice in utilizing the concepts necessary to create and integrate business documents and reports
  • Develop and assign web-based/web-enhanced/online/distance learning tasks/activities such as creating business reports in order to put into practice those concepts covered during the lectures and review
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Oral presentation of the final project which describes all the concepts utilized
  • Demonstrates the use of the project for the class and the instructor
  • Written project reports which thoroughly document the several projects assigned in-class
  • Class and individual projects which put into practice those concepts covered in-class
