COURSE DESCRIPTION

89 Forklift Safety and Operation Units: 0.50
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
A study of the basic concepts and practical use of industrial trucks and forklift operator safety procedures; including design, energy sources, fire protection and OSHA rules and regulations. 9 hours lecture and 9 hours laboratory.
 
SHORT DESCRIPTION FOR CLASS SCHEDULE

Introduction to OSHA federal and state rules and regulations related to Powered Industrial Trucks, and hands on safety and operation of a forklift.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.   List and explain 10 forklift safety rules.

2.   Explain the different designs of powered industrial trucks.

3.   List and explain energy sources and fire protection procedures.

4.   List the Battery Charger Do’s and Don’ts.

5.   Demonstrate proper connection and disconnection procedures for
      propane fuel tanks.

6.   Demonstrate proper use and completion of pre-operational
      checklist for powered industrial trucks.

7.   List areas where 11 different types of forklifts are permitted.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and assign exercises to reinforce concepts and encourage students to apply them to situations encountered in the operation of forklifts.
  • Create and have students participate in cooperative learning tasks such as small group exercises to identify issues that relate to course content and utilize the content to offer opinions, solutions and analysis with respect to those issues.
  • Present case studies to provide students with the opportunity to utilize concepts learned in class to analyze real operational forklift situations.
  • Develop and assign tasks/activities such as presentations in order to assess students understanding of forklift safety and operation concepts.
  • Instruction may take the form of online, hybrid, TV or other distance learning format.
  • Facilitate discussions regarding relevant current issues in business to encourage students to make appropriate connections to the course content.
  • Present lectures to describe the essentials of forklift safety and operation concepts and their application.  
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Quizzes and in-class participation demonstrating proficiency in the subject matter.
  • Quizzes designed to assess the student learning outcomes.
  • Written reports designed to assess the application of forklift safety and operation principles.
  • Individual web projects designed to assess student proficiency in achieving the student learning outcomes.
  • Examination designed to provide objective evidence that students have attained the level of understanding expected in the areas detailed in the Student Learning Outcomes.
  • Individual or class projects designed to evaluate the application of forklift safety and operation principles to simulations of real operational situations.
  • Individual, small group, or paired activities designed to allow students to demonstrate understanding of basic forklift safety and operation concepts.
