COURSE DESCRIPTION

66 Insurance Internship Units: 1.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
This one-unit internship will be carried out in a local insurance company and will follow the guidelines of the college. Students enrolled in this occupational internship course must be employed in the insurance industry. Students will earn credit for this course by completing 75 hours of paid work or 60 hours of volunteer work. No more than 20 hours per week may be applied toward the work requirement.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

Relate principles of insurance to situations observed and
experienced in their work environment to content of insurance
courses they have taken.

Compare and contrast the application of insurance products in
various specific need situations based on their observations of and
collaboration with insurance professionals with whom they are
working in their internship.

Explain the operation of, and describe the various responsibilities
carried out in an insurance company office based on their
observations during their internship.

 
COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 
  1. Focus will be on making connections between the responsibilities
    carried out and observed by the student in the work environment and the needs of customers for the benefits provided by insurance products.
 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Presentation of lectures and discussions on the observations students have made in their internships.
  • Cooperative/collaborative learning tasks and activities designed to assist students in comparing and contrasting  methods, procedures and techniques they have observed, determining which produced the best results, and identifying areas of potential improvement.
  • Guest speakers to allow students to interact with insurance professionals.
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • The writing of case study analyses demonstrating an understanding of their personal observations during their internships.
  • Individual and group assignments designed to demonstrate understanding of insurance company operations.
  • Class discussions designed to evaluate the procedures, methods, and processes they have observed.
  • Quizzes/examinations designed to assess students’ ability to recall, critically analyze and apply key concepts from various aspects of the insurance industry.
  • Participation as required by instructor to ensure progress in mastering the key concepts of the insurance industry and involvement in collaborative learning projects.
  • Individual web projects designed to assist students in comparing what they have observed to the operation of other insurance companies and offices.
