COURSE DESCRIPTION

22 Mgmt Communications Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
Examines the dynamics of organizational communication including a cross cultural emphasis. Practical experience is attained in verbal, non-verbal and interpersonal communication. Includes business report writing, letter writing and resume writing. 54 hours lecture.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.   Explain effective and efficient communication styles appropriate in
      various business settings

2.   Analyze the effects of human behavior and communication within
      an organization

3.   Apply concepts of organizational relationships, political/cultural
      considerations, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making
      to communication tasks

4.   Demonstrate competency in developing content and in applying
      technical skills in various written and oral business communications
      including reports, letters, memos, e-mails, instant messages,
      resumés, and group presentations

5.   Apply the understanding of group dynamics and cross-cultural 
      communication in making effective written and oral
      communications

6.   Develop proficiency in the analysis of organizational relationships,
      including political and cultural aspects, and application of problem,
      solving and decision making strategies that lead to the attainment

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Presentation of lectures and discussions on various business communication methods, in order for students to understand the effective and efficient communication styles appropriate in various business settings
  • Individual and cooperative/collaborative learning tasks and activities designed to allow students in better understanding of organizational relationships, political/cultural considerations, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making to communication tasks
  • Participatory discussions designed to allow students in better understanding of human behavior and communication within an organization
  • Exercises to reinforce concepts and provide students to apply technical skills in various written and oral business communications including reports, letters, memos, e-mails, instant messages, résumés, and group presentations
  • Collaborative learning tasks and activities to assist students in applying the understanding of group dynamics and cross-cultural communication in making effective written and oral communications
  • Discussions regarding issues in business communication to encourage students to develop proficiency in the analysis of organizational relationships, including political and cultural aspects, and application of problem, solving and decision making strategies that lead to the attainment of goals
  • Instruction may take the form of online, hybrid, TV or other distance learning format
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • The writing of business communication deliverables demonstrating understanding of concepts and application of technical skills in various written and oral business communications including reports, letters, memos, e-mails, instant messages, resumés, and group presentations
  • Individual and cooperative/collaborative tasks and activities designed to evaluate students’ understanding of organizational relationships, political/cultural considerations, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making to communication tasks
  • Participatory discussions designed to assess students’ understanding of human behavior and communication within an organization
  • Group exercises designed to assess students’ understanding of group dynamics and cross-cultural communication in making effective written and oral communications
  • Class discussions designed to evaluate students’ proficiency to analyze organizational relationships, including political and cultural aspects, and application of problem, solving and decision making strategies that lead to the attainment of goals
  • Quizzes/examination designed to assess students’ understanding of the effective and efficient communication styles appropriate in various business settings
  • Participation as required by instructor to ensure progress in mastering the course content and involvement in collaborative learning projects
