COURSE DESCRIPTION

A13A Drug Use Recognition Units: 1.00
 
Prerequisite(s): None.

Limitation on Enrollment: Must be sworn peace officer.
This course is designed to provide updated skills training for law enforcement officers enforcing the provisions of 11550 H & S code. The course fulfills the Commission on P.O.S.T. two year, twenty-four hour training requirement for advanced officer training. The course will emphasize public safety when handling incidents involving explosive devices. 20 hours lecture and 4 hours laboratory.
 
SHORT DESCRIPTION FOR CLASS SCHEDULE

Advanced officers training to assist the student in recognizing and processing individuals under the influence of a controlled substance.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.    Demonstrate an understanding of the elements required to arrest an individual under the influence of a controlled substance.

2.    Demonstrate the proficiency necessary to process an individual arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

3.    Analyze recent court case decisions and changes in the law.

4.    Describe the safety requirements necessary for handling explosive devices.

 
COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 

1.    Narcotics update
2.    Interrogations and interviews of narcotic suspects
3.    Legal update of recent court case decisions and law changes
4.    Handling of explosive devices
5.    Clinical laboratory screening of individuals under the influence

Students are also assigned reading, writing and other outside assignments equivalent to two hours per one hour lecture.

 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

•    Utilizing problem solving activities that allow for demonstrating required skills and knowledge of interrogations and interviews of narcotics suspects, case decisions and law changes, handling of explosive devices, and clinical laboratory screening of individuals under the influence.
•    Writing activities, including essays and reports, to reveal student progress and mastery of understanding the elements required to arrest and process an individual under the influence of a controlled substance.
•    Lab demonstrations to illustrate interrogations and interviews of narcotic suspects, handling of explosive devices, and clinical laboratory screening of individuals under the influence.
•    Assigning required reading in order to supplement classroom activities and expand knowledge of drug use recognition and arrests of individuals under the influence of a controlled substance.
•    Participation in simulation exercises that will allow practical application and will demonstrate mastery of required skills and knowledge of interrogations and interviews of narcotics suspects, case decisions and law changes, handling of explosive devices, and clinical laboratory screening of individuals under the influence.
•    Practicing learned skills to reinforce recognizing and processing individuals under the influence of a controlled substance.

 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

•    Computational and writing assignments, including homework and reports, to measure student learning progress on analyzing recent court case decisions and changes in the law, and understanding the elements required to arrest and process an individual under the influence of a controlled substance.
•    Skill demonstrations, class performance, problem solving activities, simulation exercises and skill performance to measure student learning progress on interrogations and interviews of narcotics suspects, case decisions and law changes, handling of explosive devices, and clinical laboratory screening of individuals under the influence.
•    Quizzes and a final examination to evaluate mastery of recognizing and processing individuals under the influence of a controlled substance.
