COURSE DESCRIPTION

A11A Effective Writing for Law Enforcement Units: 0.25
 
Prerequisite(s): None.

Limitation on Enrollment: Must be sworn peace officer
This course will give the law enforcement student a critical understanding of effective writing skills. The course will cover the various types of documents written by the professional and focus on form. 4 hours lecture and 4 hours laboratory.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

Identify the foundations for both business and professional writing.

Demonstrate the process of informing others.

Demonstrate fundamental skills involved in language for communication, sentence structure, structure of paragraphs, use of punctuation and grammar.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Utilizing problem solving activities that allow for demonstrating required skills and knowledge of effective writing, including the foundations for business and professional writing, the process of informing others, and the fundamental skills involved in language for communication, sentence structure, structure of paragraphs, use of punctuation and grammar.
  • Lab demonstrations to illustrate effective writing skills.
  • Participation in practical exercises that will allow application and will demonstrate mastery of effective writing, including the foundations for business and professional writing, the process of informing others, and the fundamental skills involved in language for communication, sentence structure, structure of paragraphs, use of punctuation and grammar.
  • Assigning required reading in order to supplement classroom activities and expand knowledge of effective writing skills.
  • Practicing learned skills to reinforce the critical understanding of effective writing.
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Skill demonstrations, class performance, problem solving activities, and homework to measure critical understanding and student learning progress on effective writing for law enforcement.
  • Final examination to evaluate mastery of effective writing for law enforcement.
