Co-Requisite(s): Student must be enrolled in at least one other course at the college. and
This course provides supervised tutoring, study skills development, and assistance in understanding college course assignments. Students receive individualized tutoring and small group instruction outside of class time in the Learning Center, which is designed to help achieve specific couse objectives related to college courses and/or to improve learning and study skills in specific subject matter. Content varies according to the course for which tutoring is sought. This course is open-entry / open-exit.

1.  Read and interpret assignments, including those that are computer-assisted. 

2.  Prepare completed assignments for the applicable instructor in accordance with class standards.

COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 

The focus of this course is to provide for the pratical use of the resources available in the Learning Center so that students may strengthen and apply skills taught in a variety of courses.

1.  Topics and objectives embedded in the Course Outline of Record of the student's course.

2.  Specific learning techniques (i.e. strategies for reading comprehension, note-taking, effective computer use, test-taking, solving application problems, utilizing and enhancing/expanding learning styles).

3.  Identified deficiencies and desirable competencies in the necessary skills for course completion based on individual evaluation.

4.  Active learning skills, including articulation and self-evaluation of personal and academic objectives.

 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Individualized tutoring in a Learning Center based on specific referral advice from course instructor or counselor.
  • Computer-assisted instruction in conjunction with individualized tutoring needs.
  • Small group instruction (such as Study Group or Supplemental Instruction) targeting specific skills or concepts.
  • Demonstrate and inform students of alternative learning styles and study skills to help students recognize and master their strengths as well as improve upon their weaknesses.
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Observation of participation in the instructional process.  The number of hours the student accrues may be used as an indicator of the student's participation.
  • Student progress will be measured by success in academic courses for which they seek tutoring.
  • Surveys will be conducted to obtain the student perspective regarding services received.  (These surveys will be used for improvement of services offered through the Learning Center).
