COURSE DESCRIPTION

64 Digital Editing Principles and Techniques Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
Non-linear computer-based editing using the industry-recognized software Final Cut Pro. Includes basic concepts of editing in post production designed to teach the aesthetics as well as techniques of the edit. May be taken a total of four times. 36 hours lecture and 54 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.   Compare and contrast linear editing and non-linear editing 
      capabilities.

2.   Describe the overall concept and purpose of editing.

3.   Use Final Cut Pro editing software to import footage, select shots 
      and assemble coherent video sequences.

4.   Apply aesthetic values to non-linear editing projects. 

5.   Select and apply appropriate digital effects, music and transitions 
      to achieve a desired outcome.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Presenting class lectures and demonstrations in order to introduce students to tools and functionality of Final Cut Pro. 
  • Showing videos, DVDs, and interactive websites as examples of digital editing projects and special effects.
  • Assigning group projects in order to engage students in project-based problem solving in a team environment.
  • Assigning individual projects and skills practice exercises in order for students to build competency in the use of editing tools and functions.
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Performance-based exercises and assignments that demonstrate students’ ability to use Final Cut Pro to create coherent sequences.
  • Oral reports and presentations in which students explain the rationale and methods used to create projects.
  • Final project that demonstrates students’ ability to plan, organize and accomplish a project that utilizes a variety of media types in a digitally edited sequence.
