COURSE DESCRIPTION

43 Television Studio and Equipment Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
Introduction to the use and set up of cameras, VTR's, editors, character generators, and test equipment for in-studio production. Activities will include theories and practices of studio set-up, production, terminology, and operation of all television production equipment. May be taken a total of three times. 36 hours of lecture and 54 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.   Use test and calibration equipment necessary to prepare a 
      television studio for live-to-tape production.

2.   Demonstrate ability to perform a variety of studio production 
      tasks including switching, audio, lighting, character-generated 
      graphics, and recorder operation.

3.   Utilize appropriate terminology in order to communicate 
      requirements of studio set-up.

4.   Analyze the studio set-up requirements for live-to-tape 
      production activities. 

5.   Describe the functions and interrelationships of production and 
      control room equipment including VTR's, editors, character 
      generators, and test equipment.

6.   Work cooperatively as a part of a production team.

Students are also assigned reading, writing and other outside assignments equivalent to two hours per one hour lecture.

 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting lectures and demonstrations to convey content and introduce industry practices.
  • Assigning practical exercises that give students an opportunity to practice techniques and build skills in setting up, connecting and disconnecting equipment in a studio environment.
  • Requiring participation in studio set-ups for a variety of production projects including those that are in support of other production classes.  
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrated completion of studio set-up and strike procedures for a variety of production types.
  • Demonstrated reliable and cooperative participation in a team production crew environment.
  • Quizzes and tests that assess students’ comprehension of concepts, practices and terminology.
