COURSE DESCRIPTION

802 Supervised Mathematics Tutoring Units:
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
This course provides supervised mathematics tutoring, study skills development, and assistance in understanding assignments for mathematics students. Students receive individualized mathematics tutoring and small group instruction outside of class time in a math learning center, which is designed to help achieve specific course objectives or to improve learning and study skills in mathematics. Content varies according to the math course for which tutoring is needed. May be taken a total of six times. Up to 54 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.  Apply a variety of resources available in a math learning center, including individualized assistance, to develop independence in the practice of mathematics.

2.  Prepare completed assignments for the applicable instructor in accordance with class standards.

3.  Demonstrate knowledge of topics and course objectives related to mathematics.

4.  Assess present knowledge for tutorial sessions by identifying content and problems where assistance is needed.

 
COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 

The focus of this course is to provide for the practical use of the resources available in a math learning center so that students may strengthen and apply mathematical skills taught in a variety of courses.

  1.   Topics and objectives embedded in the Course Outline of Record of the student’s course.
  2.  Specific learning techniques (i.e. strategies for reading comprehension, note-taking, effective computer use, test-taking, solving application problems).
  3.  Identified deficiencies and desirable competencies in the necessary skills for course completion based on individual evaluation.
 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

1. Individualized tutoring in a math learning center based on specific referral advice from course instructor or counselor.
2. Computerized instruction in conjunction with individualized tutoring needs.
3. Small group instruction targeting specific skills or concepts of corequisite course.


 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

1.       Observation of participation in the instructional process.  The number of hours the student accrues may be used as an indicator of the student’s participation
