COURSE DESCRIPTION

16 Interviewing & Counseling Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
Introduction to approaches of behavior modification through interviewing and counseling. An overview of the techniques available to entry level practitioners in corrections in counseling and interviewing. Creates an awareness of advanced methods utilized by professional counselors. Traces the development of positive relationships between the client and corrections personnel. 54 hours lecture.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

To acquire a basic knowledge of current theories and methods of behavior modification as utilized by corrections personnel.

To develop basic abilities in line level techniques of interviewing and counseling.

To obtain a common body of knowledge to serve as a base for further study in the area of interviewing and counseling.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lecture and discussion
  • Live demonstrations and video taped sequences
  • Field trips for on-site observations
  • Student participation in demonstrations
  • Role play participation in basic procedures
  • Outside special projects and independent study
  • Films, film strips, other audio visual aids
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Grades are based on demonstrated proficiency in subject matter
  • Written essay and objectiave examinations
  • Jury rating by peers and instructor on role play participation
  • Attendance andparticipation
