COURSE DESCRIPTION

45 Childhood & Culture Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
The cultural impact of child rearing on the development, personality and behavior of a child. How this culture effects motivation, goals and probability of success in society. Total of 54 hours lecture.
 
SHORT DESCRIPTION FOR CLASS SCHEDULE

How the culture in which a child is reared affects his/her growth behavior.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.   To acquaint parents, child service workers, teacher aids with the impact of
      culture and society upon the development of the child.

2.   To help appreciate the concept of socialization and how culture attempts to
      develop the kind of individuals the society needs.

3.   To help the student appreciate how socialization helps a child develop role
      concepts for later periods of his life.

4.   To help the student understand how a child's personality and growth are
      affected by socio-economic status, his own and others.

5.   To acquaint the student with resources which might help facing problems
      resulting from a child's socialization.

6.   To acquaint the student with his roles in child socialization.

7.   To combat ethnocentrism by stressing cultural relativity and intergroup
      experiences.

8.   To further develop the student's critical thinking ability by requiring the
      analysis and evaluation of data, the anticipation of alternative explanations
      and the forming of conclusions from the data presented.

      d.    The child and his culture/subculture
      e.    The child and his family
       f.    The child and other agencies of socialization

4.   Tests

Students are also assigned reading, writing and other outside assignments equivalent to two hours per one hour lecture.
