COURSE DESCRIPTION

15 Narcotics Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
A basic understanding of narcotics and dangerous drugs, the causes of addiction or habituation, identification of narcotics, hallucinogenIcs, enforcement procedure and legal aspects. 54 hours lecture.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

Identify the various illegal street drugs, their history, and various
usages and their effects.

Define the various categories of drugs that are classified as
stimulants.

Define the various categories of drugs that are classified as
depressants.

Define the various categories of drugs that are classified as
psychedelics.

Define the various categories of drugs that are classified as
 “others,” i.e., inhalants, sports drugs, and psychiatric medications.

Analyze the effect and behavioral changes in people that use
drugs.

Define the various principles and goals of treatment, mental
imbalances and illnesses that are caused by the use of
psychoactive drugs.

 
COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 
  1. Read each of the ten (10) chapters that identify the various
    psychoactive drugs.
  2. Review and discuss illegal street drugs from current media
    coverage.
  3. View videos depicting illegal drugs and discuss their identity and
    the effects of the drugs.

 

 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Class activities weekly power point presentation from the ten (10) chapters from the assigned text, “Uppers, Downers, and All Arounders.” 
  • Lecture of discussion at the conclusion of the power point presentation.
  • Display videos that cover various types of illegal drugs. 
  • Expert guest speakers from the “law enforcement’s prospective” on drug use and the effects on its users.
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Chapter quizzes
  • Written paper presentations
  • Newspaper clippings and discussion
  • In class exercises in the discussion of effects and identity of illegal psychoactive drugs
  • Visual home inspection of dangerous inhalants contained in our homes and a written response
  • Final multiple choice written exam
