Co-Requisite(s): PHY 10
An optional laboratory science course for the non-science major. Emphasis on laboratory techniques, student experimentation and laboratory demonstrations. 54 hours laboratory.
 
SHORT DESCRIPTION FOR CLASS SCHEDULE

A laboratory for the non-science major with emphasis on laboratory techniques, student experimentation and demonstrations.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.   Identify a problem and seek an experimental approach to its
      solution.

2.   Be able to collect accurate and precise data.

3.   Analyze data to compare and contrast the experimental results to
      the accepted results such as to justify the scientific priniple
      involved.

4.   Represent data in a graph for better understanding of the
      relationship between variables.

5.   Identify the different types of errors that can occur in an
      experiment.

 
COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 

 

1.   Collecting and Evaluating Data: data sheets, graphs, tables,
      equations, the informal report, a critical appraisal of the methods
      and results of the investigation, and theory of errors

2.   Selected Experiments In: Mechanics and energy, electricity, wave
      mechanics, sound, light, Atomic particles and nuclear
      forces, molecular theory

Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Problem solving exercises
