COURSE DESCRIPTION

9 Intermediate Photo Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite(s): PHO 8: Intro to Photography
An intermediate course in black and white photography with emphasis on materials, equipment, methods of application and the theory and practice of photographic composition. Introduces professional medium and large format cameras. Students required to provide 35-mm cameras with f-stop and shutter controls. Lab materials fee assessed. 27 hours lecture and 81 hours laboratory
 
SHORT DESCRIPTION FOR CLASS SCHEDULE

Intermediate black and white photography using 35 mm and larger format camera equipment. Students required to provide 35-mm camera with f-stop and shutter controls. Lab materials fee applies.
 
ADVISORY ENTRY SKILLS
Before entering the course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate competency in handling a camera, which includes loading and unloading film, manipulating aperture, shutter and focal length to create a proper exposure as well as control action and depth of field for use in specialized situations.

  2. Produce quality enlargements with appropriate contrast control.

  3. Develop, print, finish and mount black and white salon prints.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1.   Select the appropriate film and exposure techniques to achieve 
      optimal quality and desired results in black and white negatives.

2.   Identify, describe and demonstrate formal concepts of photographic
      composition.

3.   Distinguish between the characteristics and capabilities of 35-mm
      cameras and professional medium and large format cameras.

4.   Produce a preliminary portfolio of work demonstrating technical
      competencies and aesthetic merit.

5.   Define and demonstrate basic elements of lighting for simple still
      life and basic portraiture.

 
COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 
  1. Film selection and exposure techniques as applied to black and white photography.
  2. Materials and methods for processing black and white films exposed at normal and higher-than-normal film speed indexes (pushing film speed).
  3. Use of on-camera filters.
  4. Evaluation and quality control of black and white materials including contrast filters for printing.
  5. Photographic visual design and compositional elements.
  6. Natural and artificial light sources as they apply to photography.
  7. Formal concepts of photo composition including rule of thirds, line, texture, pattern, shape and form.
 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lectures, discussions and demonstrations conducted by instructor or guest speakers
  • Videos, films, slide presentations and audiotapes to introduce and reinforce concepts
  • Pair and small group activities and discussions that aid skills and concept development
  • Class exercises that aid skills and concept development
  • Reports and papers that encourage research, sharing of knowledge, and reinforce instructional information
  • Handouts that reinforce and expand upon information presented in lectures, detail assignment requirements and give specific grading criteria for each assignment
  • Cooperative learning tasks that encourage interactive learning and group effort
  • Individual instructor-student conferences to provide customized instruction for each student
  • Guest lecturers to expose the students to professional experiences and examples of photography

Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Oral reports/presentations/performance
  • Critique of practical assignments
