14 Basic Studio Photography

Designed to introduce students to the basic theory and principles of studio photography. This course provides hands-on experience in creating studio and environmental portraits with an emphasis on lighting and posing techniques. 27 hours lecture and 81 hours laboratory

SHORT DESCRIPTION FOR CLASS SCHEDULE
|
|
Introduction to basic studio portraiture with an emphasis on individual head and shoulder portraits.
|
|
|
ADVISORY ENTRY SKILLS
Before entering the course, students will be able to:
|

Demonstrate competency in handling a camera, which includes loading and unloading film, manipulating aperture, shutter and focal length to create a proper exposure as well as control action and depth of field for use in specialized situations.

Produce quality enlargements with appropriate contrast control.

Develop, print, finish and mount black and white salon prints.

Select the appropriate film and exposure techniques to achieve optimal quality and desired results in black and white negatives.

Identify, describe and demonstrate formal concepts of photographic composition.

Distinguish between the characteristics and capabilities of 35-mm cameras and professional medium and large format cameras.

Produce a preliminary portfolio of work demonstrating technical competencies and aesthetic merit.

Define and demonstrate basic elements of lighting for simple still life and basic portraiture.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate the correct control of studio lighting for head and shoulder portraits
2. Analyze subject psychology
3. Pose the subject effectively for a compelling image
4. Produce professional quality portrait negatives and prints

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

- Lectures and demonstrations by instructor or guest speakers
- Laboratory projects that give students the opportunity for skills development
- Multi-media presentations to enhance and expand on lectures including the use of photographic examples
- Photography assignments that provide an opportunity for students to practice techniques discussed in lecture
- Reading assignments that reinforce lecture material and encourage discussion and critical thinking
- Handouts that detail assignment requirements and specific grading criteria for each assignment
- Handouts that provide information and samples not contained in the required text
- Group critique of completed assignments to develop evaluative abilities and learn to speak with precision and clarity to express observations

METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

- Grades based on demonstrated proficiency in subject matter
- Quizzes
- Completion of studio projects
- Attendance at lectures and laboratory meetings
- Participation in group discussion and critiques
- Critique of portfolio of representative portraits
- Midterm and final examinations
