COURSE DESCRIPTION

9 Midi Composition/Film Scoring Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite(s): MUS 8B: Sequencing and Orchestration with Digital Audio and MIDI
Practical experience using the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), Digital Audio and its applications. Emphasis will be on recording musically advanced compositions and scoring music for film. Total of 36 hours lecture and 54 hours laboratory. This course may be taken a total of three times.
 
SHORT DESCRIPTION FOR CLASS SCHEDULE

Practical experience using the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), Digital Audio and its applications. Emphasis will be on recording musically advanced compositions and scoring music for film.
 
ADVISORY ENTRY SKILLS
Before entering the course, students will be able to:

  1. Record and perform intermediate-level sequences.

  2. Write an intermediate-level popular song.

  3. Analyze simple techniques used in formal composition of art music.

  4. Orchestrate intermediate levels of music with Digital Audio/MIDI.

  5. Record and edit digital audio (Samples).

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Record professional quality sequences.
  2. Score sophisticated music for film cues.
  3. Describe and apply compositional skills in a sophisticated, contemporary commercial music environment.
  4. Record and edit digital audio, including mastering techniques.

  1. Recording and sequencing with Digital audio
  2. Writing classical, jazz and contemporary/popular music
  3. Recording and mastering techniques
  4. Writing music for film
  5. Using music notation software applications in scoring music for film

 

 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to introduce material to students so that they may record professional quality sequences and score sophisticated music for film cues.
  • Create and assign pair and small group activities such as applying compositional skills in a sophisticated, contemporary commercial music environment.
  • Develop and assign class exercises such as analyzing simple techniques used in formal composition of art music.
  • Create and have students participate in cooperative learning tasks, such as recording and editing digital audio, including mastering techniques.
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Presentations/demonstrations designed to evaluate students’ abilities to apply compositional skills in a sophisticated, contemporary commercial music environment
  • Written reports/presentations designed to evaluate students’ abilities to demonstrate simple techniques used in formal composition of art music.
  • Quizzes/examinations designed to analyze students’ progress and knowledge to record professional quality sequences and score sophisticated music for film cues.
