COURSE DESCRIPTION

10 Introduction to Security Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
This is an introductory course into the career ladder of Private Security. This course will serve as the entry point for understanding this career field, as unique from traditional law enforcement services, e.g., police officer, deputy sheriff. The students will focus on the provision of security services for the private sector and the business world by satisfying the customer through the provision of myriad services at the security officer, supervisor and manager/administrator level. 54 hours lecture.
 
SHORT DESCRIPTION FOR CLASS SCHEDULE

An introductory to the profession and career field of Private Security – focusing upon the provision of services to the private sector customer as a security officer, supervisor, manager or administrator.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

Define the duties and responsibilities of the private security
officer; from entry level to manager/administrator.

Describe the specialized training techniques available to security
officers as they accomplish their duties and responsibilities.

Review internal and external security, emergency, fire life safety
and facility defense plans.

Analyze and review the operation of patrol procedures, surveillance
techniques, internal operations, and powers of detention and
arrest in the exercise of their daily duties.

Define the security officer’s role in follow up investigations and loss
prevention.

Analyze, and evaluate the most efficient access control system for
their facility’s program in detection and apprehension of criminal
activity.

Describe the myriad security services available in the industry,
e.g., contract officers, proprietary services, armored car services,
security consultants, locksmiths, access control specialists and
private investigators.

Compare and contrast between the public law enforcement
community and the private security service, as to the ethical and
legal issues each confronts.

Identify the variety of career opportunities for the security officer with their attendant duties and responsibilities.

    and regulation
  5. Identify and analyze the following areas of security
    1. Proprietary security v contract security
    2. Risk analysis and the security survey
    3. Outer defenses; building and perimeter protection
    4. Interior and exterior security concerns
    5. Inner defenses; intrusion and access control
    6. Fire protection, safety and emergency planning
    7. Internal theft controls
    8. Insurance
    9. Retail security
    10. Cargo security
    11. Computer security
  6. Analyze personnel policies for internal security
  7. Identify specific security threats to the organization
  8. Synthesize new ideas toward the implementation of strategies for solving related problems
 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Classroom lectures and presentations that solicit active participation by students in discussing the origins and development of private security, defining security’s role in society, identifying and analyzing specific problem areas of security, analyzing personnel policies for internal security, identifying specific security threats to the organization, describing the process of security education, training, certification, and regulation,  and synthesizing new ideas toward the implementation of strategies for solving security related problems.
  • Assignment  of individual and group exercises, assignment of individual papers regarding specific issues in security, developing risk assessment and related security surveys, and developing prototype regulations for appropriate personnel policies.
  • Developing web based activities utilizing ASIS International www.asisonline.org through the WEBCT distance education environment
  • In the traditional lecture method, there will be use of overhead transparencies, white board, handouts, videos, and student participation
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Chapter quizzes; course knowledge and comprehension
  • On line paper presentations; essays, review, analytical and evaluative exercises to assess student responses to specific outlined questions in the related private security environment using the WEBCT distance education environment
  • In class exercises; pro/con analysis of current practitioner practices; cost/benefit analysis of proprietary v contract security personnel hiring and retention
