Open to all students interested in a college choral singing experience.
|
|
A choir of mixed voices dedicated to the further study, rehearsal, and public performance of anthems, spirituals, and African American gospel (traditional/contemporary) music. May be taken a total of four times. 54 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

- Sing in parts using correct tone quality, tuning, pitch, rhythmic accuracy, and expressive interpretation in the African American gospel tradition.
- Demonstrate standard repertoire from spiritual and gospel music.
- Perform in public repertoire from the gospel tradition.

- Advanced aural skills development and rehearsal of gospel literature.
- Advanced interpretation of musical elements within gospel music.
- Advanced analysis and interpretation of gospel literature using appropriate stylistic interpretations.
- Performance techniques for worship services and public performances.
- Leadership in sectional rehearsals in a gospel choir.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:
|
- Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to introduce material to students so they may gain knowledge in the subject area of advanced gospel music.
- Show videos/films/CD’s in order for students to hear and view masters of advanced gospel singing so that they will be better prepared to discuss and demonstrate styles of advanced gospel music.
- Conduct individual conferences/performances in order to discuss student progress and offer improvement of learning for all of the student learning outcomes.
- Develop and assign class exercises such as advanced vocal warm-ups, scales, sight-reading, rhythmic figures and vocal styles to prepare students to successfully demonstrate proper advanced gospel singing technique.
- Create and assign pair and small group activities such as duets, trios and quartets in order for students to become more independent as singers of advanced gospel music.
- Invite guest lecturers to class so that students will have the opportunity to learn course topics from artists well-known in the field of advanced gospel singing.
- Create public performance opportunities so that students may have a venue to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in advanced gospel music.

METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

- Oral reports/presentations/performances designed to evaluate overall student learning of advanced gospel music literature.
- Written reports/presentations designed to evaluate the individual student’s cognition of course topics.
- Quizzes/examinations designed to evaluate student progress and knowledge in course topics.
- Class and individual projects designed to evaluate the students’ recall of advanced gospel music literature on an individual basis.
- Participation and regular attendance designed to monitor student involvement and learning of the student outcomes on a regular basis.
- Final examination designed to evaluate student progress of the learning outcomes for the entire semester.

Music from the African American Gospel tradition, such as the music of Richard Smallwood, Edwin Hawkins, the Winans, James Cleveland, Andre Crouch, and others.
Arranged spirituals from the African American tradition.
