COURSE DESCRIPTION

54 Community Jazz Ensemble Units: 0.50
 
Prerequisite(s): None.

Limitation on Enrollment: Previous experience in performance of jazz literature and audition on or before the first class meeting.
Study and performance of standard jazz ensemble literature. Appearances at college and community functions are made each semester. Subsequent enrollment will provide additional skill and competency development within the subject matter. May be taken a total of four times. Total of 27 hours laboratory.
 
SHORT DESCRIPTION FOR CLASS SCHEDULE

Practical experience in performing music in popular and jazz styles arranged for jazz ensemble.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Perform in a musical organization playing jazz literature.
  2. Demonstrate disciplines and methods of performance in a musical ensemble required for performing jazz repertoire.
  3. Demonstrate artistic performances of varied works of standard jazz band literature fitted to the size and instrumentation of the group available in any given semester.
  4. Perform as a public relations group in the state, local community and public schools within the College District
 
COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 
  1. Elements of music, including: scales, rhythm patterns
  2. Elements of a musical performance, including: balance, blend, style
  3. Appropriate articulation
  4. Performance techniques for big bands
  5. Sight-reading during public performances

 

 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to demonstrate disciplines and methods of performance in a musical ensemble required for performing jazz repertoire
  • Listen to audio examples in order to demonstrate artistic performances of varied works of standard jazz band literature fitted to the size and instrumentation of the group available in any given semester.
  • Create and have students participate in cooperative learning tasks in the rehearsal room, such as sight-reading in public.

 

 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Performances designed to assess students’ abilities to demonstrate artistic realizations of varied works of standard jazz band literature.
  • Class and individual projects designed to assess students’ abilities to sight-read music in a public performance.
  • Final examination designed to assess students’ abilities to perform as a public relations group.
