COURSE DESCRIPTION

49 Percussion Ensemble Units: 1.00
 
Prerequisite(s): None.

Advisory: Concurrent enrollment in Music 42 or Music 48
This class is designed to give students practical experience in performing music written and arranged for percussion ensemble. Opportunity is provided for the student to play snare drum, bass drum, all accessories and mallet keyboard instruments. Emphasis is on group participation and public performances. Subsequent enrollment will provide the student an opportunity for additional skill and competency development within the subject matter. May be taken a total of four times. 54 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. To familiarize the student with typical percussion ensemble instrumentation and literature.
  2. To provide the student with an opportunity to improve and broaden his instrumental technique.
  3. To provide practical experience and training in percussion ensemble
  4. To provide fundamental instruction on the various percussion ensemble instruments.

   1.   OVERVIEW – INTROUDCTION TO PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE
         a.   Brief study of literature
         b.   Use of Audio Visual materials for introduction
         c.   Identification of Percussion family instrumentation 
   2.   BASIC FUNDAMENTALS OF INSTRUMENTS OF INDEFINITE PITCH
         a.   Identification of instruments
         b.   Fundamentals of producing a tone
         c.   Snare Drum performance Techniques
         d.   Matched grip vs. traditional grip
         e.   Selection of mallets, sticks, and heads 
   3.   BASIC FUNDAMENTALS OF INSTRUMENTS OF DEFINITE PITCH
         a.   Identification of Instruments
         b.   Fundamentals of tone production
         c.   Mallet performance technique
         d.   Tympani performance technique
         e.   Introduction to scales, chromatics, etudes
         f.   Discussion of mallet types 
   4.   PREPARATION OF PERFORMANCE MATERIALS
         a.   Selection of Ensemble material
         b.   Rehearsal experience involving both
         c.    Large and small groups
         d.   Balance and blend drill
         e.   Study of more advance audio visual materials
         f.    Rehearsal designed to lead to public performance
   

 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to introduce material to students so they may gain knowledge in the subject area of percussion ensemble methods and techniques.
  • Show videos/films/CD’s in order for students to hear and view percussion ensembles so that they will be better prepared to discuss and demonstrate percussion ensemble methods.
  • Conduct individual conferences/performances in order to discuss student progress and offer improvement of learning for all of the student learning outcomes.
  • Develop and assign class exercises such as drills, sight-reading, rhythmic figures and percussion ensemble styles to prepare students to successfully demonstrate proper percussion ensemble technique.
  • Create and assign pair and small group activities such as duets, trios and quartets in order for students to become more independent as a percussion ensemble member.
  • Invite guest lecturers to class so that students will have the opportunity to learn course topics from artists well-known in the field of percussion ensembles.
  • Create public performance opportunities so that students may have a venue to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in percussion ensemble techniques.
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Oral reports/presentations/performances designed to evaluate overall student learning of percussion ensemble literature, technique, group performance, and individual performance.
  • Written reports/presentations designed to evaluate the individual student’s cognition of course topics.
  • Quizzes/examinations designed to evaluate student progress and knowledge in course topics.
  • Class and individual projects designed to evaluate the students’ recall of percussion ensemble literature on an individual basis.
  • Participation and regular attendance designed to monitor student involvement and learning of the student outcomes on a regular basis.
  • Final examination designed to evaluate student progress of the learning outcomes for the entire semester.
