Limitation on Enrollment:
Basic instrumental skills on a band instrument.
|
|
Rehearsal and performance of music suitable for marching band. Marching skills emphasized. Participation in public performances required. May be taken a total of four times. 108 hours laboratory.

- Perform on an instrument while marching.
- Demonstrate correct techniques for marching.
- Analyze band music literature.
- Perform in an ensemble using appropriate techniques for instrumental music.

1. Basic Marching Fundamentals a. From Halt Position b. In a Moving Situation c. Directional Changes 2. Advanced Marching Fundamentals a. Increased spatial awareness b. Arc formation drills, including expansion c. "Living Box" Movement Drill sequences d. Expanded interval exercises, both line and form 3. Playing/Equipment Handling Techniques a. Review of Basics b. Ensemble Drill exercises on scales, chromatics c. Breathing techniques/breath support drill d. Preparation and memorization of Performance literature 4. Combining the Techniques of Marching & Playing a. Review of Basics b. Spatial awareness in a block formation (parade) c. Advanced spatial awareness in an arc form (field) d. Combining arcs, lines, and expansions 5. Preparation of Marching materials for Performance a. Engage in activities intended to coordinate marching responsibilities (visual Presentation) and musical responsibilities (aural presentation) b. Memorization of complex combinations of marching, maneuvering and playing c. Spatial awareness as it relates to non-musical elements, i.e. flags, rifles, and dance team d. Creating a presentation that incorporates various styles.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:
|
- Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to introduce material to students so they may gain knowledge in the subject area of marching band fundamentals and techniques.
- Show videos/films/CD’s in order for students to hear and view marching bands so that they will be better prepared to discuss and demonstrate marching band basics and methods.
- Conduct individual conferences/performances in order to discuss student progress and offer improvement of learning for all of the student learning outcomes.
- Develop and assign class exercises such as movement drills, warm-ups, scales, sight-reading, and memorization recall to prepare students to successfully demonstrate proper marching band technique.
- Create and assign pair and small group activities such as duets, trios and quartets in order for students to become more independent in a marching band setting.
- Invite guest lecturers to class so that students will have the opportunity to learn course topics from artists well-known in the field of marching band.
- Create public performance opportunities so that students may have a venue to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in marching band basics and techniques.

METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:
|
- Oral reports/presentations/performances designed to evaluate overall student learning of marching band literature, technique, public performance, and individual movement within a group.
- Written reports/presentations designed to evaluate the individual student’s cognition of course topics.
- Quizzes/examinations designed to evaluate student progress and knowledge in course topics.
- Class and individual projects designed to evaluate the students’ recall of marching band literature on an individual basis.
- Participation and regular attendance designed to monitor student involvement and learning of the student outcomes on a regular basis.
- Final examination designed to evaluate student progress of the learning outcomes for the entire semester.

- Marching Band literature selected annually based on the theme of the show that year. Past selections have included:
• Highlights from "West Side Story," Highlights from "Les Miserables"; • Music from "Tower of Power," "Earth Wind & Fire," "Arturo Sandoval," "Santana," "Gloria Estefan," as well as numerous "top 40" tunes, pep band music, patriotic music, Broadway show tunes, and Sousa marches.
