Performance on a woodwind instrument as part of the Marching Band program. Playing and marching skills emphasized. May be taken a total of four times. 54 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

- Play a woodwind instrument while marching in the band.
- Perform in half-time shows, parades, field shows, and other public appearances of the Marching Band.
- Demonstrate correct methods of marching in a band while playing a woodwind instrument.

- Methods of playing a woodwind instrument.
- Methods of marching in a drum and bugle corps-style band show.
- Playing techniques on a woodwind instrument for marching band shows.
- Breathing techniques and breath support drills.
- Preparation and memorization of performance literature.
- Simultaneous demands of marching and playing.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:
|
- Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to introduce material to students so they may gain knowledge in the subject area of marching band woodwind methods.
- Show videos/films/CD’s in order for students to hear and view marching bands so that they will be better prepared to discuss and demonstrate marching band woodwind methods.
- Conduct individual conferences/performances in order to discuss student progress and offer improvement of learning for all of the student learning outcomes.
- Develop and assign class exercises such as warm-ups, scales, sight-reading, rhythmic figures and woodwind styles to prepare students to successfully demonstrate proper marching band technique for woodwinds.
- Create and assign pair and small group activities such as duets, trios and quartets in order for students to become more independent as woodwind instrumentalists in a marching band setting.
- Invite guest lecturers to class so that students will have the opportunity to learn course topics from artists well-known in the field of marching band.
- Create public performance opportunities so that students may have a venue to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in marching band woodwind techniques.

METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:
|
- Oral reports/presentations/performances designed to evaluate overall student learning of woodwind marching band literature, technique, public performance, and individual improvisation.
- Written reports/presentations designed to evaluate the individual student’s cognition of course topics.
- Quizzes/examinations designed to evaluate student progress and knowledge in course topics.
- Class and individual projects designed to evaluate the students’ recall of woodwind marching band literature on an individual basis.
- Participation and regular attendance designed to monitor student involvement and learning of the student outcomes on a regular basis.
- Final examination designed to evaluate student progress of the learning outcomes for the entire semester.

- Marching Band literature selected annually based on the theme of the show that year. Past selections have included:
Highlights from "West Side Story," Highlights from "Les Miserables"; Music from "Tower of Power," "Earth Wind & Fire," "Arturo Sandoval," "Santana," "Gloria Estefan," as well as numerous "top 40" tunes, pep band music, patriotic music, Broadway show tunes, and Sousa marches.
