COURSE DESCRIPTION

43 Jazz Improv and Theory Units: 1.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
Practical experience in the art of jazz improvisation and the theory behind effective improvisation. Jazz combo or similar format provides the basis for improvisation instruction, benefiting both the beginner and the experienced player. May be taken a total of four times. 54 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Analyze, learn, and perform standard jazz literature.
  2. Analyze, transcribe and perform recorded improvised solos.
  3. Analyze jazz and popular music chord symbols.
  4. Demonstrate appropriate performance practices for different styles of jazz, including: be-bop, modal, hard-bop and fusion

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to analyze, learn, and perform standard jazz literature
  • Listen to audio examples in order to analyze, transcribe and perform recorded improvised solos.
  • Develop and assign class exercises such as studying jazz repertoire in order to analyze jazz and popular music chord symbols.
  • Invite guest lecturers to class in order to demonstrate appropriate performance practices for different styles of jazz, including: be-bop, modal, hard-bop and fusion

 

 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Oral reports/presentations/performances designed to assess students’ abilities to analyze, learn, and perform standard jazz literature.
  • Written reports and homework designed to evaluate students’ abilities to analyze jazz and popular music chord symbols.
  • Projects designed to assess students’ abilities to transcribe and perform recorded improvised solos.
  • Final examination designed to evaluate students’ abilities to demonstrate appropriate performance practices for different styles of jazz, including: be-bop, modal, hard-bop and fusion.
