41 Chamber Singers Units: 2.00
 
Prerequisite(s): None.

Advisory: Concurrent enrollment in MUSIC 29, 33, 51, 69 or 73.
Limitation on Enrollment: Audition on or before the first class meeting
A select chamber vocal group dedicated to the study, rehearsal, and public performance of smaller vocal repertoire from Renaissance to Contemporary. Activities include festivals, concerts, and radio and TV broadcasts and tours. Subsequent enrollment in additional semesters will provide the student an opportunity for additional skill and competency development within the subject matter. May be taken a total of four times. 108 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Distinguish, analyze, and create vocal chamber music performance skills, including correct balance, blend, diction, tone production, rhythm, pitch accuracy, and small ensemble coordination.
  2. Evaluate vocal chamber music of all musical styles and periods and be able to perform this literature with sensitivity, accuracy and artistry.
  3. Interpret expressive vocal chamber music.
  4. Evaluate and perform music from other cultures as exhibited in vocal chamber music.
 
COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 
  1. Vocal technique
  2. Aural skills – intonation; voice part recognition; recognition of tonal qualities
  3. Blend, balance, pitch, tone, and timbre coordination with all sections
  4. Sightreading – time/key signatures; phrases, dynamics; style; tempi; musical terms
  5. Performance skills – proper approach to all aspects of performance
  6. Music literature for small vocal chamber ensemble
 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to introduce material to students so they may gain knowledge in the subject area of chamber choir music.
  • Show videos/films/CD’s in order for students to hear and view masters of jazz so that they will be better prepared to discuss and demonstrate styles of chamber choir music.
  • Conduct individual conferences/performances in order to discuss student progress and offer improvement of learning for all of the student learning outcomes.
  • Develop and assign class exercises such as vocal warm-ups, scales, sight-reading, rhythmic figures and vocal styles to prepare students to successfully demonstrate proper chamber choir technique.
  • Invite guest lecturers to class so that students will have the opportunity to learn course topics from artists well-known in the field of chamber choir music.
  • Create and assign pair and small group activities such as duets, trios and quartets in order for students to become more independent as singers of chamber choir music.
  • Create public performance opportunities so that students may have a venue to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in chamber choir music.
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Oral reports/presentations/performances designed to evaluate overall student learning of chamber choir literature, vocal technique, sightreading and aural skills.
  • Written reports/presentations designed to evaluate the individual student’s cognition of course topics.
  • Quizzes/examinations designed to evaluate student progress and knowledge in course topics.
  • Class and individual projects designed to evaluate the students’ recall of chamber choir literature on an individual basis.
  • Participation designed to monitor student involvement and learning of the student outcomes on a regular basis.
  • Final examination designed to evaluate student progress of the learning outcomes for the entire semester.
