COURSE DESCRIPTION

33 Vocal Jazz Ensemble Units: 2.00
 
Prerequisite(s): None.

Advisory: Concurrent enrollment in MUSIC 29, 41, 51, 69 or 81.
Limitation on Enrollment: Audition by instructor
A select vocal ensemble dedicated to the study and performance of jazz music arranged for vocal jazz ensemble. Appearances at public and private functions will be made throughout the year. Opportunity for students to arrange and compose. May be taken a total of four times. 108 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate appropriate vocal technique within the jazz genre.
  2. Aurally recognize and demonstrate swing style.
  3. Recall and diagram standard jazz forms.                                                
  4. Compose an improvisational vocal solo.
  5. Demonstrate appropriate stage presence.
  6. Demonstrate proper microphone technique.
  7. Recall and repeat several works of vocal jazz literature.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to introduce material to students so they may gain knowledge in the subject area of vocal jazz.
  • Show videos/films/CD’s in order for students to hear and view masters of jazz so that they will be better prepared to discuss and demonstrate styles of vocal jazz.
  • Conduct individual conferences/performances in order to discuss student progress and offer improvement of learning for all of the student learning outcomes.
  • Develop and assign class exercises such as vocal warm-ups, scales, sight-reading, rhythmic figures and vocal styles to prepare students to successfully demonstrate proper vocal jazz technique.
  • Create and assign pair and small group activities such as duets, trios and quartets in order for students to become more independent as singers of vocal jazz.
  • Invite guest lecturers to class so that students will have the opportunity to learn course topics from artists well-known in the field of vocal jazz.
  • Create public performance opportunities so that students may have a venue to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in vocal jazz.
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Oral reports/presentations/performances designed to evaluate overall student learning of vocal jazz literature, microphone technique, stage presence, and individual improvisation.
  • Written reports/presentations designed to evaluate the individual student’s cognition of course topics.
  • Quizzes/examinations designed to evaluate student progress and knowledge in course topics.
  • Class and individual projects designed to evaluate the students’ recall of vocal jazz literature on an individual basis.
  • Participation and regular attendance designed to monitor student involvement and learning of the student outcomes on a regular basis.
  • Final examination designed to evaluate student progress of the learning outcomes for the entire semester.
