COURSE DESCRIPTION

32 Class Piano Units: 1.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
Group work in developing keyboard facility and reading of music notation. Opportunity provided for individual attention and performance. Developing knowledge and facility with primary and secondary chords and their use in song accompaniment patterns. Subsequent enrollment will provide the student an opportunity for additional skill and competency development. May be taken a total of four times. 17 hours lecture and 32 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

   1.   Play major and minor scales hands together with increasing
         speed and accuracy.

   2.   Play chord progressions in most major and minor keys and
         harmonize melodies using those progressions.

   3.   Improvise melodies over chord patterns.

   4.   Transpose melodies and harmonies to other keys.

   5.   Perform repertoire pieces of increasing difficulty.

   6.   Play at sight pieces of increasing difficulty, hymns, and
         accompaniment in most keys.

 
COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 
  1. Music notation on the grand staff
  2. Sight reading from the grand staff at the keyboard
  3. Technique for keyboard skill development including five-finger patterns and exercises
  4. Major and minor scales and arpeggios in all keys
  5. Using the pedal (legato or syncopated pedaling)
  6. Playing chord progressions in all major and minor keys
  7. Transposing melodies and chords to keys other than the notated key
  8. Score reading for a variety of clefs and voicings, including SAB and SATB
  9. Standard repertoire for the piano and harpsichord
  10. 20th century repertoire and techniques on the keyboard
  11. Form analysis of composers’ styles

 

 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the principles of piano technique, and to apply them to the further development of individual technique
  • Show Videos/audio recordings in order to solve novel problems of the musical/pianistic problems at hand
  • Organize group activities/discussion and cooperative learning tasks in order to promote collaborative learning environment
  • Distribute handouts in order to assess student learning progress
  • Attend live performances in order to reflect critically on one’s own performance
  • Assign written exercises on music notation in order to develop students’ music notation skills
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Class and individual performances designed to measure comprehensive stage
  • Written evaluations and worksheets designed to determine student level of improvement
  • Quizzes/examinations designed to evaluate learning progress
  • Participation and regular attendance designed to demonstrate consistency on learning effort
  • Final examination/recital designed to evaluate comprehensive pianistic knowledge
