  • Open to all students interested in a college choral singing experience.
A vocal ensemble of mixed voices dedicated to the study, rehearsal, and performance of a variety of choral literature. May be taken a total of four times. 54 hours laboratory.

A vocal ensemble of mixed voices dedicated to the study, rehearsal, and performance of a variety of choral literature.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proper vocal technique, including posture and breathing appropriate for a college choir.
  2. Recognize and distinguish balance, blend, diction, and intonation.
  3. Review a variety of song literature to include both sacred and secular genres.
  4. Discuss the underlying concepts of expressive singing, including phrasing and the translation of musical texts.
  5. Evaluate and perform a variety of choral literature, including the music of other cultures.
 
COURSE CONTENT

  TOPICS
 
  1. Aspects of proper vocal technique, including posture, breathing, diction, and vowel placement
  2. Appropriate for a college choir.
  3. Ear training and sight reading, including Intervals.
  4. Group performance.
  5. Ensemble aural skills including blend, balance, and intonation.
  6. Standard choral literature for college choir.
 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to introduce material to students so they may gain knowledge in the subject area college choral music.
  • Show videos/films/CD’s in order for students to hear and view prominent choirs so that they will be better prepared to discuss and demonstrate appropriate technique and style for college choral music.
  • Conduct individual conferences/performances in order to discuss student progress and offer improvement of learning for all of the student learning outcomes.
  • Develop and assign class exercises such as vocal warm-ups, scales, sight-reading, rhythmic figures and vocal styles to prepare students to successfully demonstrate proper technique and literature for a college choir.
  • Create and assign pair and small group activities such as duets, trios and quartets in order for students to become more independent as singers of college choral music.
  • Invite guest lecturers to class so that students will have the opportunity to learn course topics from artists well-known in the field of choral music.
  • Create public performance opportunities so that students may have a venue to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in college choral music.
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Oral reports/presentations/performances designed to evaluate overall student learning of the student learning outcomes for this course.
  • Written reports/presentations designed to evaluate the individual student’s cognition of course topics.
  • Quizzes/examinations designed to evaluate student progress and knowledge in course topics.
  • Class and individual projects designed to evaluate the students’ recall of choral literature on an individual basis.
  • Participation and regular attendance designed to monitor student involvement and learning of the student outcomes on a regular basis.
  • Final examination designed to evaluate student progress of the learning outcomes for the entire semester.
