COURSE DESCRIPTION

25 Jazz Appreciation Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
A comprehensive study of jazz, from its origins to the present day. Study will be centered on influential composers, instrumentalists, vocalists and arrangers. There will also be an introduction to and study of musical elements, such as instrumentation, lyrics, form, rhythm and harmony. 54 hours lecture.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to understand key elements of music.
  • Show videos/films/slides/audio tapes in order to identify key figures and recordings in Jazz.
  • Create and assign pair and small group activities such as Identifying elements of jazz.
  • Develop and assign class exercises such as analyzing and identifying different styles of jazz.

 

 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Written reports/presentations designed to identify key figures and recordings in Jazz.
  • Quizzes/examinations designed to evaluate students’ abilities in analyzing and identifying different styles of jazz.
  • Class and individual projects designed evaluate students’ abilities to understand key elements of music.
  • Final examination designed to assess students’ understanding and assessment of important jazz figures and events.
