12 Advanced Applied Piano

MUS P36
or
a two unit performance class.
|
|
Advanced individual piano lessons for those students who are preparing for a recital, audition, or a transfer exam, or for those who wish to study at an advanced level. Advanced instruction includes supervised practice, concert attendance and ensemble participation. Enrollment for a second semester ensures uninterrupted study for students who are preparing to transfer as music majors. This course may be taken a total of four times. 162 hours laboratory.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
|
- Perform repertoire in public (recital) at an advanced level that includes sonatas, preludes and fugues, Romantic character pieces, advanced twentieth century works or other complex works.
- Perform advanced piano repertoire of increasing complexity and interpretative sophistication from memory in front of a faculty jury.
- Play major and harmonic minor scales, hand together, four octaves, at a speed appropriate for an audition or transfer examination at a four-year college or university.
- Compare and contrast the specific sound elements which constitute music for the keyboard and to recognize those sound elements in performance.

- Technical studies appropriate for advanced study in piano.
- Study of general piano literature through listening and attendance at concerts.
- Structured, documented, individual practice sessions appropriate to an advanced level of study.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:
|
- Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the principles of piano technique, and to apply them to the further development of individual technique
- Show Videos/audio recordings in order to solve novel problems of the musical/pianistic problems at hand
- Employ technical exercises in order to reinforce finger dexterity
- Invite guest clinicians and/or master class speakers in order to expose students to broader scope of piano performance practices

METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:
|
- Public performances as approved by and planned with the instructor designed to exhibit refinement of elements of good musicianship
- Written reports and concert attendance designed to promote critical thinking
- Final Jury evaluation before the music faculty designed to demonstrate improvement of performance skills
- Required recital performance designed to reveal knowledge of musical style and interpretation through public performance medium
- Completion of individual repertoire assigned
- Laboratory log-in for practice hours, participation and regular attendance at lessons designed to show consistency in effort
