1 Teaching Music to Young Children

Prerequisite: None.
|
|
Instruction in teaching music to young children. Emphasis will be on music for early childhood ages 3-8. Musical elements and theory will be introduced through activities appropriate for children. 54 hours lecture.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

- Evaluate, organize and implement a daily music curriculum for the classroom.
- Analyze and implement the basic elements of music.
- Demonstrate and perform functionally on autoharp, recorder, and simple percussion instruments.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:
|
- Present class lectures/discussions/demonstrations in order to introduce material to students so that they may gain better knowledge in the subject area of music for young children.
- Show videos/films/slides/audio tapes in order to help students understand and examine a daily music curriculum for the classroom
- Create and assign pair and small group activities such as teaching musical skills to children.
- Develop and assign class exercises such as Analyzing and implementing the basic elements of music in a classroom.
- Create and have students participate in cooperative learning tasks, such as a simple musical performance.

METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

- Oral reports/presentations/performances designed to assess students’ abilities to understand and perform functionally on autoharp, recorder, and simple percussion instruments.
- Written reports/presentations designed to evaluate students’ abilities for organizing and implementing a daily music curriculum for the classroom.
- Quizzes/examinations designed to analyze students’ progress and knowledge with the basic elements of music.
- Final examination designed to evaluate the students’ abilities to Demonstrate and perform functionally on autoharp, recorder, and simple percussion instruments.
