54 Employee Labor Relations

This course provides a framework for studying labor relations, the objective of employee relationships, industrial relations, right of labor and management, labor law, bargaining, unions, employment contracts, grievances, developing effective new processes, history of labor relations, and ethics. 54 hours lecture.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

- Understand the role of employee labor relations in human resources management, along with key influences impacting labor relations today.
- Explain the various labor laws involved with employee relations, along with how these impact the workplace.
- Compare the strategies, structures and conflicting rights of labor and management, within the context of policies, procedures and contracts.
- Identify key labor laws affecting business and industry today.
Ascertain the key role of unions; how they are organized and how bargaining disputes, along with contract issues are resolved.
- Relate the importance of ethics within the context of employee labor relations and the workplace.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:
|
- Class lectures/discussions in order to assist students in achieving the learning outcomes by reviewing relevant course content.
- Videos/films/slides/audio tapes in order give the student a better feeling of exposure to activities within the international logistics industry than may be possible by lectures/discussions.
- Pair and small group activities such as preparing challenging discussion questions for other groups. A competition format may be used in this process. This is done in order to help students achieve outcomes by stimulating individual participation in group activities.
- Guest lecturers to class in order to bring current industry experience directly into the classroom and help students attain objectives through direct interface with active industry experts.
- Web-based/web-enhanced tasks and activities in order to assist the student in achieving learning objectives by offering opportunities to interact with other students online, while also providing individualized learning opportunities.
- Instruction may take the form of online, hybrid, TV or other distance learning format.

METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

- Oral reports/presentations/performances designed to allow the student to verbally demonstrate individual achievement of specific learning outcomes.
- Written reports/presentations designed to provide the student an opportunity to demonstrate in writing a mastery of individual learning outcomes.
- Quizzes and examinations designed to determine the students level of knowledge related to course content required for achievement of learning outcomes
- Class and individual projects designed to encourage alternative and creative methods for the student to demonstrate achievement of learning outcomes or share knowledge or experience working with course content.
