46 Contemporary Quality Systems Mgmt Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
An introduction to Quality Management principles and to their application in business, industry, and public service organizations including Deming’s 14 points, process management, ISO 9000 certification, Six Sigma efforts, Baldrige criteria and introductory statistical process control. 54 hours lecture.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Prepare and complete an assessment of principles of management including Deming’s 14 points, Continuous Process Improvement (CPI), and Total Quality Management (TQM) .
  2. Select and effectively use process analysis and statistical process control (SPC) techniques.
  3. Identify, assess, and evaluate the skills required to work effectively in a team oriented problem solving environment using contemporary quality tools and methods.
  4. Develop strategy and applications for continuous improvement in an organization.
  5. Organize “Champion” and evaluate a Six Sigma project
  6. Complete and evaluate a National Quality Award (Baldrige) self-assessment.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Presentation of lectures and discussions on principles of quality management, CPI and TQM
  • Cooperative/collaborative learning tasks and activities such as case study analysis and exercises designed to prepare students to apply appropriate SPC, CPI, and Six-Sigma protocols.
  • Create small group activities to provide simulated management conditions and apply team building and collaborative process to problem solving
  • Develop and assign web-enhances/online/distance learning tasks to enhance understanding and application of quality management and continuous process improvement principles in the context of business performance through board postings, and other formats to allow students to express positions regarding assigned topics.
  • Instruction may take the form of online, hybrid, distance learning formats
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • The writing of a research paper and oral presentation of findings regarding the implementation of TQM,CPI, Six-Sigma and other quality management efforts.
  • Individual and group assignments designed to apply SPC tools including measurement system analysis to manage business functions using philosophies of quality management experts in a team environment.
  • Class discussion designed to evaluate students’ understanding of the process of total quality improvement, as well as the national and international quality awards and certification programs.
  • Quizzes and exams to assess students’ ability to select and carry out quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participation in discussions as required by instructor to ensure progress in mastering the course content and critical evaluation of differing perspectives.
