8 History of the Americas Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite(s): None.

Advisory: Qualifying reading placement level recommended
A history of the Western Hemisphere including a study of the pre-Columbian Indian cultures, European exploration and colonization, life in the colonial Americas, and the achievement of independence by the United States and Latin America. Latin America, Canada, and the United States are studied as an integrated whole. Included is a consideration of the Constitution of the United States. 54 hours lecture.

A history of the Western Hemisphere from pre-Columbian times to the United States and Latin American wars of independence.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lectures which both disseminate information and pose problems.
  • Discussions which emphasize the ability to reason and think.
  • Assigned readings outside of class.
  • Discussion of current events related to course content.
  • May require assigned outside reading which involves .independent research in addition to the required readings.

 

 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Grades are based on demonstrated proficiency in subject matter.
  • Examinations (at least 4).
  • Examinations must include written assignments involving critical analysis as well as exposition.
  • Assigned outside writing which involves independent research in addition to the required readings.
