COURSE DESCRIPTION

34 History of Women in America Units: 3.00
 
Prerequisite: None.
 
A survey of the political social and cultural institutions which have shaped the role and character of women in America. The historical role of women in the development of the nation, and the ongoing struggle to achieve political, economic, and social equality will be examined. 54 hours lecture.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

Learn to think critically and reason logically on the basis of historical information.

Become aware of the contributions and roles of women in American history.

Analyze the material from the historical perspectiv.

Understand present issues and problems in light of their roots in the past.

  1. Women in  Pre-Industrial American (1600-1800)
  2. Women in Industrializing America (1800-1910)
  3. Women in Post-Industrial America (1910-present)
 
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lectures which both disseminate information and pose problems
  • Discussions which emphasize the ability to reason and think critically
  • Assigned reading outside of class
  • Discussion of current event related to course content
  • May require assigned outside writing which involves independent research in addition to the required readings
 
METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Grades are based on demonstrated proficiency in subject matter
  • Examinations (at least 4)
  • Examinations must include written assignments involving critical analysis as well as exposition
  • Assigned outside writing which involves independent research in addition to the required readings
