Prerequisite: None.

|
An examination of the evolution of American military and naval practices and institutions as they have developed through the major wars involving the United States up to 1900. The roles of leadership and technology and their impact upon the art of war will also be discussed. 54 hours lecture.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

- Know and understand the influences which have shaped American military institutions and practices through the end of the nineteenth century.
- Explain the causes and consequences of the wars involving American armed forces from 1775 to 1900.
- Understand contemporary developments and controversies in light of their roots in the past.
- Understand and appreciate the nature of his¬torical processes and methods.
- Become familiar with the various sources of information relevant to American military history.
- Develop greater critical thinking in regard to military and naval practices through the analysis and evaluation of data, the an¬ticipation of alternative explanations, and the forming of conclusions from the data presented.

|
- How warfare evolved to 1775.
- Events leading to the War for Independence and the decisions and strategies followed throughout the war years.
- The diplomatic and political practices and procedures involved in devising a national defense policy.
- Events leading to The War of 1812 and the decisions and strategies followed throughout the war years.
- National defense policies from 1815 to 1845 that influenced future defense considerations.
- The war with Mexico and its impact on US policy and economy.
- The impetus for and evolution of reform and innovation in the Armed Forces from 1845 to 1860.
- Events leading to the Civil War and strategies followed throughout the war years leading to the Reconstruction era.
- The Reconstruction era and its impact on a nation.
- Post-civil war military and naval policies as a response to war year experiences.
- Events leading to the Spanish-American War and the decisions and strategies followed throughout the war years.
- The aftermath of the Spanish-American War on US policy and the economy.
Students are also assigned reading, writing and other outside assignments equivalent to two hours per one hour lecture.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Methods of instruction used to achieve student learning outcomes may include, but are not limited to:

- Class lectures, presentations, and media viewing to learn about the history of the evolution of warfare, the War for Independence, the War of 1812, the war with Mexico, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War.
- Class discussions that compare historical trends with current policies regarding diplomatic and political practices and procedures involving national defense, reform and innovation in the Armed Forces, and the US economy.
- Handouts and media displays to acquire knowledge of the impact of war on national security, warfare strategy, and political decision-making.

METHODS OF EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated for progress in and/or mastery of learning outcomes by methods of evaluation which may include, but are not limited to:

- Examinations containing multiple-choice questions and essay questions emphasizing critical thinking and analysis of military policies, strategies, and the impact of war and subsequent security policies on society.
- Written and/or oral reports of the condition of the military structure during the War for Independence, the War of 1812, the war with Mexico, the Civil War, or the Spanish-American War.
